Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
