Roughly 50 automobiles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.
Vehicles, exterior walls and mailboxes were marked, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they stated in a release.
Police report they were alerted late on Wednesday evening, when a man noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored substance.
The fluid had been placed in the pattern of a swastika, they reported.
Police then found multiple other vandalized cars and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation banning the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Police say initial examinations show the substance was most likely blood from a person.
"There is still no lead as to its origin; officials are presently not aware of any physical harm in connection with the event," they stated.
Municipal representatives stated they were attempting "to unravel the incident" and have asked to the community for tips.
An important official stated the attack rendered him speechless and needed to be solved promptly.
"This event affects the core of Hanau and revives the pain of the far-right terrorist attack five years ago," he stated on social media, mentioning the killing of nine victims by a gunman focusing on residents of migrant background in five years prior.
